Every mouth is different. In some cases, braces are only needed for a year, while in other cases, braces are needed for two years. You can expect that you will wear braces for one to two years. Afterwards, you will be fitted for a retainer that you will wear day and night to retain the new positions of your teeth. Eventually you will only need to wear it at night, then finally a few nights per week.
Unfortunately, with metal braces, there will be certain foods you must avoid during treatment. Failure to do so will cause damage to the brackets and the wires, prolonging the length of treatment. Chewy, sticky, and hard, crunchy foods are at the top of the list. Some foods you will still be able to eat if cut into smaller bite-size pieces, while others you will have to avoid entirely. There are other treatment options, like clear, removable trays, that do not limit your diet.
Getting your braces put on does not typically hurt. You may experience some tenderness to your bite and soreness in your gums as you adjust to the brackets and wires, but only for 4-5 days. After adjustments, you will also experience a bit of tenderness in your bite and will want to rely on soft foods like fish, yogurt, and jello for a few days after an adjustment. You can also take Advil or Tylenol to help reduce discomfort.
